Why triathlon? I think my first triathlon was the Noosa Tri in 1991. It was a mountain of fun. But then I got old, so now I have to cross-train to avoid injury. But that said, although I love all endurance sports (being completely devoid of any fast twitch muscle fibres) I still find triathlon a mountain of fun. I love preparing the long term strategy and the race management and then being able to stick to it on the day. Finishing feels great but finishing on target is really satisfying.
Upcoming goals Canberra half ironman in December and Ironman Australia in March 2010. Keep track of Ian's countdown to Ironman Australia.
Stengths Probably running, but perhaps planning a race strategy and being able to stick to it.
Proudest moment in sport Scoring two tries in the 1983 Colts quarter final in Brisbane.
Personal bests The 2008 Gold Coast half ironman at 5:16 is my official PB but the Port Mac half in 2006 at 5:26 felt like a better achievement, maybe because it was proverbialling down throughout the race.
What is the key to successful training? As much as I would like to say acquiring lots of really cool bike kit, it is probably more a case of getting the right advice, preparing a good program, and sticking to it.
What motivates you the most? Still deciding.
